All Saints College, St Joseph’s Campus, Lochinvar have proved they are one of the best breeding grounds for rugby leaguetalent in the Hunter Valley after anoutstanding NSW All Schools Carnival in Sydney.
St Joseph’s were represented with a team in each of the four secondary divisions from under 13s to under 16s after the four teams won their Knights Knockout competitions earlier this month.
St Joseph’s under 16s claimed the All Schools title after defeating Ashcroft High School 12-4 in the final at St Mary’s last night.
The under 16s team, who featured NSW under-16 rugby league representative and Newcastle Knights under-16 national-title winning captain Brodie Jones and NSW Country under-16 rugby league representative Nicholas Lawrence among their playing group, had qualified for the decider after thrashing Terra Sancta College, Blacktown in the semi-final.
They had earlier topped their pool with wins over St Dominic’s College, Penrith, Kiama High School and St Mary’s Cathedral College, Sydney.
Hudson Young and Jordy Mitchell scored tries for St Joseph’s in the second half after Ashcroft had taken an early 4-0 lead.
Young, who helped the Newcastle Knights win the Harold Matthews title over Penrith in May, was named man of the match in the final.
St Joseph’s under 14s also won all three of their pool games to top their group before losing their semi-final 16-10 to St Dominic’s.
The under 14s downed De La Salle, Caringbah (10-6), St Edward’s, Gosford (12-0) and St John’s, Nowra (14-8) in their three pool games.
The under 13s and 15s did not advance from their respective pools but under 15s coach Chris Mills said the entire school was proud of the team’s achievements.
“Our target for the season was just to get to the Knights Knockout grand final,” he said.
“To get four to win it (Knights Knockout) was above any of our expectations and to then go the next step further and have a win (at All Schools) was incredible.”
Mills said the school had won an All Schools title in the early 2000s but it had been a long time between drinks.
